skin-formation:

A guide that takes you through some common skin types and skin conditions to offer you some insight into what you may be experiencing.

From medical skin conditions, skincare queries, to just wanting to know best to look after your skin, we have you.

Your skin type

Largely determined by genetics, our skin type is based on everything from pore size and oil production, to lipid levels and whether or not it has heightened skin reactivity.

The condition of our skin can vary and change throughout our life, according to the various internal and external factors it is subjected to. For example; hormonal changes such as pregnancy and menopause, taking medication like roaccutane or chemotherapy, and your day to day environment that affects the skin greatly, like being a gardener and outside for long periods.

In order to address skin concerns or achieve results, we first must understand the condition(s) of your skin and your skin type. This is a speciality of ours and we offer you an abundance of education so you aren’t left guessing and unsure of how to look after your skin.

3 core skin types

  • A term used to described well-balanced skin - it rarely has an oily shine and it will have small, yet visible and uniform size pores across the face.

  • Your skin will have large pores that are visible over most of the face and towards the hairline. Breakout and congestion often is present, but not always. The skin tends to be thicker and develops an oily shine throughout the day. What’s confusing about this skin type is that you may not have any visible shine, and think your skin feels dry, but if you’re experiencing rosacea, acne or seborrheic dermatitis, then your skin is, in fact, oily.

  • Dry skin lacks the lipids that it needs to retain moisture and build a protective shield against external influences. Your skin will have very fine, nearly invisible pores with no oily shine and will be thinner, more delicate and prone to flaking and sensitivity, with a rough texture and fine lines. You will have probably experienced dry skin conditions, such as eczema or dermatitis at some point in your life.

Skin conditions

Unlike our skin type that doesn’t change and is genetically programmed to us, the condition(s) of our skin can alter, come and go throughout life, and be influenced by multiple factors such as environmentally, externally, internally and medically.

With millions of skin conditions out there, below are the most common to affect people and yet still misunderstood.
If your skin condition doesn’t appear below, that’s alright too because we have an abundance of experience and knowledge for many conditions, and can make referral recommendations where needed!
